In RTOPilot, programs and courses work together to describe what you deliver and how students enrol. This article explains the difference and how to set each one up.

What is a program?

A program is the overarching qualification, course or skill set that a student works towards. A program can be a VET-based qualification, course or skill set from the national register, or your own custom offering. Each program is made up of the units that a student must complete.

What is a course?

A course is the offering that students actually enrol in. It carries the practical details: price, delivery method, enrolment settings, cover photo, language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) requirements, and the certificates issued on completion. Individual classes (with dates, sessions and trainers) are then created from a course.

Create a program

  1. Go to Programs and select New Program.

  2. Enter a Name. For a VET offering, use the qualification, course or skill set name as it appears on the national register. For a non-VET offering, choose your own name.

  3. Add a Description, Coverage, Requirements and Nominal Hours as needed.

  4. Tick VET if the program is recognised on the national register of vocational education and training.

  5. Under Units, search for and add the units that make up the program. You can create a new unit if it is not found.

  6. Save the program.

  1. Go to Courses and select New Course.

  2. Enter the course Name, Price, Delivery Method and add the Units.

  3. To link the course to a program, use the Program field and search by program code or name.

  4. Set your Enrolment Settings, LLN requirements and certificates, then save.

Linking a course to a program tells RTOPilot the course represents that qualification, so in-progress units are included in AVETMISS exports as part of the program.
